Many of you know that I homeschool Kai. It brings me such joy to incorporate #learningactivities from friends and their #blackownedbusiness! We love puzzles and have gotten several from @kidochicago In fact, Kai thinks that whenever we are in the area that she’s supposed to get a toy lol!!

Now back to the full circle moment, the real OGs around here know! Kai modeled for #kidochicago when she a tiny tot! The last photo and video are from January 2017!!

So, #todayinBlackHistory, I’m sharing @kidochicago! What started as a t-shirt line to fill the gap in the children’s clothing market has beautifully blossomed into a gorgeous brick and mortar store in Chicago’s #southloop. In this episode of #AroundTownWithKiarraAndKai we visit @colorfactoryco Chicago! It’s located in the iconic #SearsTower (yes Sears lol, I can’t bring myself to say the W word) in #downtownChicago.

We recently checked out the Winter Colorland experience and it was so fun! It will be melting away soon l, today is the last day, but there will be more amazing and color installations to come!

Here are a few pro tips if you plan on visiting, which I STRONGLY suggest you do!

1. Grab a @spothero parking spot in the garage immediately across from the Sears Tower, thank me later! Or use a ride share service.

2. Don’t worry about your coat in the cold weather. They have a seamless coat check upon entry that you pick up after the last installation

3. You can spend your time or move through the exhibits fairly quickly. It took us about 2 hours total.

4. All ages can experience #colorfactory! There’s something for everyone

5. You will get a personalized QR code at the start, you can keep the little card or access it on your phone. Throughout the exhibit there are photo stations where you and your family/friends can pose! The photos are then sent to you and accessible through your personalized QR code.

6. There are lots of restaurants in the food hall. So you can grab lunch or an early dinner after you leave the exhibit. Just double check the operating hours.

So, when we had the opportunity to attend @brickfestlive this past weekend I jumped on it! We had a lot of fun with the hands on attractions and were in awe of the life sized figures!

Now, let’s talk regional or neuraxial anesthesia. In the case of labor & delivery, an epidural, or spinal if you’re having a c-section, can be a phenomenal resource for those that choose to use it.

Per @acog_org “There is no other circumstance in which it is considered acceptable for an individual to experience untreated severe pain that is amenable to safe intervention while the individual is under a physician’s care.” ‼️

An epidural is administered by an anesthesiologist. It can be used for labor analgesia or a c-section if that becomes necessary.

Here are a few more facts from ACOG:
💉 They provide pain relief during labor w/minimal maternal and neonatal adverse effects.
💉 Epidurals do not appear to increase the #cesareandelivery rate and shouldn’t be withheld for that concern
💉 maternal request for pain relief should be enough of an indication to proceed w/an #epidural
💉 there are very few contraindications to regional anesthesia but they include clotting & platelet disorders due to concerns for an epidural or spinal hematoma.
💉 some adverse effects include “spinal” or postdural puncture headaches, maternal hypotension = low blood pressure, pruritis = itching, nausea/vomiting and shivering.

In the end, it’s your body & your delivery. No one can force you to get an epidural, nor should they. No one can withhold care from you because you want or don’t want an epidural. You have bodily autonomy. It should be a decision you make after informed consent is given. I like to give patients options for pain relief, which include others not discussed above. I’ve seen so many patients conflicted about what to do. I tell them there is no prize for having an #unmedicatedbirth. However, if they choose not to use anesthesia, I wholeheartedly support their decision to do so! I also let them know that they can change their mind! If your #birthplan says “no epidural” and you change your mind, no one will hold you to it!

When I saw that #pregnancynose was trending I wanted to share why this may happen during pregnancy! Sharing is caring right?! Now, this may be unexpected for some but is actually quite common.

If you’ve ever been pregnant then you know first hand that it’s a very dynamic process. Your body may change to the point where you feel like you can’t recognize it ‼️

Welp, our noses don’t wanna feel left out so, for some, they join the #pregnancysymptom party 🎉

It’s believed that #pregnantnose is related to the hemodynamic changes of pregnancy. Blood volume increases significantly during pregnancy to supply the uterus and the developing fetus. Well, the increased volume/flow isn’t isolated to the uterus, and can impact other areas. Can you say hello #swollenfeet 🦶🏽?!

The hormone #progesterone causes dilation of smooth muscle (found throughout the body in our intestines and blood vessels etc…). So, in the nose, combine dilated blood vessels and increased blood flow/volume and some will notice that their noses are larger than pre-pregnancy. Most of these changes will resolve 6-8 weeks post partum!

Nasal congestion, runny noses and nose bleeds can also be more frequent during pregnancy for similar reasons.

Now if you have any concerns about your nose and/or new nasal symptoms make sure to let your #obgyn or #midwife know!

I’ve started this year with intention. You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t been as present here; that too was intentional. I’ve been tending to things behind the scenes. I made a vision board for the first time. I devised a weekly schedule to help me focus and better plan ahead. I’ve intentionally changed what type and how I consume information; in fact, I’m set to finish my 2nd book of the year tonight!

Change is possible, it starts within! I hope your new year is off to a great start! What new things or changes are you implementing for 2023? I’ll share another in the comments.

It was a beautiful year of transformation, love, light and release. I shared it with and traveled with people I love. I had so much fun reliving these moments as I created this video. This year, I experienced greater joy and peace as I was intentional about inviting them in. God blessed me greatly in the valley so I could see the mountain top!

Sometimes growth isn’t “visible” until you step back to see how far you’ve come! *that’ll preach* *waves church fan*

I never really notice how much my locs have grown until I see older photos! I know y’all see the hang time too! 💃🏽💃🏽

Anyway, I had wanted locs for YEARS, at least a decade or more. Ask @amber_michelle lol I used to tell her I wanted a loc transplant! I finally made the jump Sept 2020 with a nudge from my girl @brownskinbeautiful.

I started with interlocking and switched to palm rolling in 2021. I get a retwist about every 4 weeks. I have about 100 locs now. I started with 96 I think and I’ve added 3-4 #locextensions with my own previously shed hair. My favorite thing about my hair is how carefree it allows me to be. I literally wake up, take my scarf off, shake my hair out and go!!

I rarely make a big to do about my birthday. I always find a way to celebrate but I never really plan. I will literally plan for everyone and everything else! I’ve danced all my life but have always wanted to do some form of ballroom or salsa dancing. So this year, I made it happen on my bday! We had SO much fun as you can tell. I’ve found such joy in simple pleasures this year! Most have involved family and friends and I plan to do a lot more of that in 2023! ✨✨
